Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, London Symphony Orchestra*, George Szell - Airs De Concert Et Lieder De Mozar

The folk songs and poems of the collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn The Youth's Magic Horn , first published in the early 19th century, played a crucial role in Mahler's development as a composer.

Encompassing the vast range of expression in these 12 settings - from hauntingly dark tragedy to exuberant comedy - are the two defining lieder singers of the second half of the 20th century, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Like Mahler himself, the Budapest-born, Vienna-trained conductor George Szell exemplified the rich musical tradition of Central Europe.

In addition he studied composition and music theory with Foerster, Mandyczewski and Reger. He signed a ten-year contract with the Viennese music publishing company Universal Edition in , and in the same year gave the first performance of his Piano Quartet Op. Szell was then appointed first conductor at the Berlin State Opera under Erich Kleiber, remaining there for five years before returning to Prague to take up the position of chief conductor at the German Opera House, conducting in addition the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.

He made his American debut with the St Louis Symphony Orchestra in , and he also appeared as a guest conductor with the Courtauld-Sargent concerts in London and with the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.

  2. To mark her seventy-fifth birthday EMI have produced this formidable tribute to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's art. Each of these CDs is very generously filled and the transfers, with the few reservations expressed below, are well made. They provide an admirable conspectus of her extensive career of recording: the sheer breadth of the material is astonishing as is the consistency of the musical.
  3. For all except those who long ago contracted an allergy, Schwarzkopf's distinction as a Mozart singer can perhaps at this date be taken as axiomatic. The thing that particularly interested me in this recital was its chronology. Anti-clockwise, it takes us from , when the recordings with Szell were made, to , the Mozart arias with Pritchard conducting.
