The negative reviews lament the departure from the classic quartet sound, and the positive reviews defend this work from the stance of "everyone needs to grow - you can't do the same thing forever".

Here is my descriptive, not judgmental take on the whole affair. I liken the classic Dokken to a string quartet in classical music: Each band member contributing their voice to the collective whole. Mick's drums, Jeff's bass, Don's pure lone voice and George's guitar - that serpentine lead and rhythm playing being the backbone of the whole thing AND the icing on the cake.

What we have on Dysfunctional is a larger sound, with additional rhythm guitar possibly Don and massive group vocals. So George apparently re-worked the lead guitar and some backing parts after the fact. This pretty much explains what we are hearing.

During my first listen, I could not put my finger on what they were going for. Not quite 70s prog, perhaps Styx without the keyboards and the over-enunciated lyrics? A clue!

Upon further listening, I hear a real strong King's X influence. I've given far too much space to this, but I would recommend it IF you already have the classic catalog. Complete that first, and get this for a different take, a reflective look back in time via a "wall of sound".

As best as I can articulate it, this is a slightly heavier and darker hybrid style of the hard rock of the early 70s and the progressive rock of the late 70s, in the case of the latter, mostly the non-keyboard oriented material. George Lynch has elected to elaborate his riffing formula a little bit, as his riffs under the more vocally and lead guitar dominated incarnation that they used to be were extremely formulaic, in order to fit this new sound.

There are a lot of pretty solid songs on here, in a fairly varied collection of styles. I can understand why people would like this, and I also understand how people can utterly despise this.
