Nationality is troublesome when linked to corruption and crime. The prime minister seems unaware of this fact. The minster of tourism seems unable to really get a handle on how to regulate the unregulated and dangerous behavior in his industry. Some few bad apples, including some wonderfully verbose leaders, are decimating an entire country's ability to survive.
Is government blind? Driving around New Providence it has become clear how devastating the last few years have been to Bahamian-owned and operated businesses. Businesses are gone. How will people survive? In the meantime, Bahamians lose homes, and more businesses close. Government pronounces that the economy is improving yet unemployment is higher than it has been in a very long time and it will continue to rise as Canadian banks move more and more operations offshore because of the high cost of doing business in the country.
There is a lack of government control, there are poorly educated yet high earning staff and ministerial intervention in areas unforeseen is rampant. The New York Times did a 'wonderful' story on the disaster of Canadian banks in the Caribbean and the hopeless mess in The Bahamas; of course Baha Mar featured prominently in that report. But as many do not read, we did not see the writing on the wall, nor on the international page.
Our country and our way of life is in danger of collapsing, yet we choose to spend on Christmas as if it will never come again.
Job uncertainty is rising, yet Christmas was a huge financial success. Today, it is primarily boat building and smack fishing using locally-made fishing boats. In October , the community of Cherokee Sound erected a monument dedicated to the Cherokee fishermen and their smacks. The people of this community once thrived from the fishing industry and distinguished themselves by carrying five sails rather than the usual seven on their fishing smacks.
Scripted on the monument is information dating back from the mid 's to the late 's that includes the history of the fishing industry in that community, the names of the fishermen who drowned during a fishing trip, and the names of the smacks operating during that century. Boundaries and names shown do not necessarily reflect the map policy of the National Geographic.

Here in The Bahamas, live music is a sought after source of entertainment, and remains an important traditional medium of storytelling and cultural expression. For such a small country, The Bahamas has produced a noteworthy repertoire of music amid a deep pool of Caribbean talent- including regional legends and global contemporary stars such as: BahaMen , Sweet Emily, Ronnie Butler, Julien Believe , and even Lenny Kravitz.
Traditional Bahamian music is rhythmic and playful, utilizing percussion especially the goatskin drum , string, and free reed instruments such as the accordion and harmonica.
In the summer months, weekend music festivals such as Junkanoo in July and Goombay Summer Festival every Friday in August are popular among locals and visitors alike.
