Over time, however, most of his memories returned, but his desire to be a doctor never did. He left school in the spring of and headed to California soon thereafter. When Ed's band decided to explore opportunities on the West Coast, he gave Johnny a call and asked if he'd like to join them, which he did.
They changed the name of the band to "Heart" which pre-dated the band later formed by the Wilson sisters and soon got a deal with the Warner Bros. Jimi Hendrix was also on that label and "Heart" opened for him in what Johnny describes as some of the most memorable gigs he was ever involved in. Moving forward to the creation of what started as a joke, but soon became "the gift that keeps on giving," as Johnny puts it.
Thirty-five years ago this summer, "Smoke From a Distant Fire" climbed to the top of the charts. It started when a sleep-deprived Ed told his roommate Steven Stewart, also from Montgomery and a classically trained guitar player, that he should quit trying to be Bach and write something that could make money.
Steven replied "Anybody can write that stuff" and proceeded to play what Johnny calls "this really cool bluesy riff. Steven pitched in a few lyric ideas and Johnny filled in some of the blanks with the final chorus and bridge lyrics. The team took the title from a poem Ed had written in college. Working with Jerry Wexler was graduate school. In the 80s, Johnny created music for a string of national commercials for such companies as Century 21, Levis, Coors Light, and Lowenbrau, among others.
